From Pat Toomey’s “Week in Washington” email…
This week, President Trump addressed the nation in support of boosting security at our southern border. Contrary to what my Democratic colleagues continue to say, the $5.7 billion that President Trump is requesting would not be used to build a 2,000 mile wall. Rather, these funds would be used to maintain and expand the existing 350 miles of security fencing at priority locations identified by U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
I support boosting funding for security and humanitarian aid at our southern border provided taxpayer dollars are used efficiently and effectively. Senate Democrats used to share this view, as they repeatedly supported billions for this objective prior to President Trump's election.
With this in mind, I continue to think that it is possible for President Trump, Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and Minority Leader Chuck Schumer to reach a deal that ends this partial government shutdown, boosts border security funding, and ensures that hundreds of thousands of government workers receive paychecks.
I needed a shovel and a shower after reading that. “Senate Democrats used to share this view...prior to President Trump’s election” They voted unaminously last month for it, and they still do share this view, but Republicans no longer share, because Fox and Friends told Don Trump not to.
Edit. I need to add to this. Last year, Toomey was supporting Kavanaugh and I called him on it. He responded with a form letter that said that “he is a good judge who is respected by his colleagues.” I sent back that a teacher with the accusations laid against him might lose his certification and would almost certainly not keep a job. Kavanaugh was looking at a lifetime job. His response was a form letter that said that “he is a good judge who is respected by his colleagues.” Either he didn’t bother to read what I said, or it never even got to his desk.
