So the current occupant has committed impeachable offenses and is obstructing justice. But over at National Review, the real constitutional crisis is…. Liz Warren.
Yup. Rick “Starbursts” Lowry can’t concern himself about abuse of power because a greater crisis looms on the horizon: “Should the Massachusetts senator become president of the United States, she will undertake a historic bout of federal activism unmoored from any serious consideration of constitutional constraints.”
Dear Rick, this is simple. Policy differences are not a constitutional crisis. We Democrats and Progressives didnt much care for Ryan’s tax cut or the botched ACA-replacement scam, but we never said it was a constitutional crisis. We have expressed concerns about McConnell’s Janus-faced approach to judicial appointments , but it was always clear that this was about precedent and procedure. We did not care for the fact that Trump became the current occupant via the EC, hey, that’s the way the Constitution works. A sitting president extorting political tinged investigations, however? That’s abuse of power, mate. Are you still be blinded by those little starbursts Sarah Plain sent you back in 08? We would have though you’d have learned to spot a grifter by now. Apparently not.
We can expect more of this, as wingers will be amping up the scare tactics.
Edit: One, I didnt delve into Lowry’s argle-bargle much, but he seems to think a wealth tax is unconstitutional, that lobbying is free speech, and that trusts are constitutionally protected. Who knew? We do know that Republicans have no trouble with Federal activism, or judicial activism for that matter, when it suits them. He’s also ‘concerned’ about executives orders, a concern that kicks in when Democrats take office and which disappears when Republicans ascend.
Two, “activist” is also code for ‘dangerous ideologue’ if not outright red-baiting. Warren is, as any cursory study would show, a pragmatist by temperament and in the Wilson-Roosevelt tradition of taming capital. If Lowry is concerned about ideologues, he might look in a mirror.
