The adage – Curses are like chickens; they always come home to roost – has again been proven true.
In this case, the curse is former Congressman Trey Gowdy’s shameless hypocrisy.
After all, Gowdy, who agreed yesterday to perform as an outside consultant to help Donald Trump withhold information and documents from Congress and disrespect the rule of law, once lectured the world on how ‘wrong’ it would be to withhold information and documents from Congress. If that isn’t bad enough, Gowdy’s new position requires him to help Trump continue in his ongoing quest to disrespect the law.
Hmmm.
You remember Trey Gowdy, don’t you?
He’s a banty rooster-like little fellow with a reedy voice who, after eight years as a Republican Congressman, decided last year to pursue greener pastures by no longer serving the best interests of the good people of South Carolina.
Trey Gowdy’s the guy who led the House Select Committee on Benghazi in the GOP’s attempt to kill former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s poll numbers as she made her bid for the White House.
You remember the Benghazi investigation, don’t you?
For 25 months, Gowdy and Republican cohorts like Jason Chaffetz, the guy who quit Congress to make big bucks ‘commenting’ for FOX News, constantly ranted and raved in televised congressional hearings designed to convince the public and themselves that Hillary Clinton had conspired with terrorists to destroy the American embassy in Benghazi and murder our ambassador to Libya.
Gowdy and his Republican pals threw away millions of taxpayer dollars and wasted countless hours they should have devoted to serving their constituents and, after more than two years, got nothing but sore throats and tarnished reputations.
And then, as Gowdy’s time in office wound down, he worked his little heart out, trying to obstruct the Mueller investigation by encouraging the White House to withhold information and documents as it disrespected the law.
And, now, by joining the Trump effort to hide the truth from the American people by disrespecting the right of Congress to fulfill its Constitutional obligation to serve as a check on the Executive Branch, the honorable former Republican Congressman has taken perhaps the final step to guarantee that he will forever be remembered as the classic definition of what it means to be a hypocrite.
Ain’t that a shame?
P.S. The dictionary definition of vicissitude is: the quality or state of being changeable while the dictionary definition of a hypocrite is: a person who puts on a false appearance of virtue or religion
