Received this e-mail from U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D. NY):
Friends,
If we’re going to end the epidemic of gun violence in America, we have to break the NRA’s stranglehold over Washington. That means throwing all our support behind leaders unafraid to stand up to the gun lobby and fight for meaningful reforms.
Today, I want to tell you about three freshman Congresswomen doing exactly that: Reps. Veronica Escobar, Lucy McBath and Debbie Mucarsel-Powell.
For each of these women, gun violence is personal. They’ve seen their families and their communities torn apart by senseless violence, and are working tirelessly to make real change.
- Veronica Escobar (TX-16) represents the city of El Paso, Texas, where 22 people were killed in one of the deadliest mass-shootings in our country’s history. She’s been a champion for her community in the wake of tragedy, fighting for common sense gun safety reforms and calling out the hate, divisiveness and bigotry that fuel violence.
- Lucy McBath (GA-6) lost her son, Jordan Davis, to gun violence in 2012: He was shot and killed by a stranger at a Florida gas station for playing music “too loudly” in his car. Lucy became a national spokesperson for Everytown for Gun Safety and Moms Demand Action before running for Congress in 2018. Karen Handel, Lucy’s 2018 opponent, is one of several Republicans already vying for this seat. Lucy defeated Karen by a single percentage point in the midterms, and is gearing up for a tough reelection fight.
- Debbie Mucarsel-Powell (FL-26) immigrated to South Florida from Ecuador with her mother and sisters as a young girl. When she was 24, her father was killed in a senseless act of gun violence just outside his home in Ecuador. Since being elected to Congress, Debbie has championed gun violence prevention, combating climate change and immigration reform. Debbie defeated her GOP opponent opponent by just two points—we can’t take this seat for granted.
-
Will you chip in just $25 and make sure Veronica, Lucy and Debbie have the resources to win re-election? If we’re going to hold our House majority and make real progress on gun safety, we have to give them all we’ve got. You can use this link: https://secure.actblue.com/donate/ots_ve_lm_dm
Thank you for standing with me on this,
