Welcome to the New Day Cafe! This is an open thread.
I’ve been reading a usage and grammar guide, Dreyer’s English, by the copy chief at Random House. Apparently other people have, too.
It’s been on the bestseller list ever since it came out, which seems surprising for a book on usage and grammar. When I was in junior high school, I would get perfect scores on most of my grammar tests. That at was 30 years ago, however, and many of the rules have changed.
Some of the updated rules I was familiar with. It’s now accepted to end a sentence with a preposition. And it’s now accepted to start a sentence with “But” or “And”.
Some of the others I was a bit thrown by. Where did the apostrophe after plural s’s go? In 2019, you buy vegetables at the farmers market, not the farmers’ market. When did this happen? Why did this happen?
At any rate, here are a few tips form Dreyer, courtesy of his Twitter feed.
Only one of these stays fresh outside of a refrigerator. (Sorry.)
This is probably a good one, but I’m not doing it. Since I’m not a professional writer, I can do what I want. Very much so, in fact. Of course. Really, I’d quite rather not follow this tip.
Dreyer is currently at war with AP Stylebook over “pled” vs. “pleaded”. Preet Bharara got this started.
Star Wars fans are unhappy with Dreyer, too.
It’s a fun book. Have a look at it if you get a chance.

All are welcome to join the fun, the silliness, the conversations. If you don’t know...just ask! Some things really do require a bit of explanation.
There will be a few surprises along the way, all good ones, we hope.
