No, she didn’t “scorch” public schools, as the headline to an article in the NY Post would make one believe. Instead she explained that because she was bilingual when she got to elementary school, she was a identified as needing remedial education. Only when she took a standardized test did the school realize she is as smart as she has shown herself to be, and the schools responded accordingly. A legitimate criticism, but not a “scorch”. She later said that public schools are “one of the greatest gems of public good in the United States”. She also used her continually emerging leadership skills to rally the crowd to whom she was speaking, including a heckler, to her point.
The NY Post, however, stuck that headline on it, and because many people only read the headlines, a lot of people today must be shaking their heads thinking AOC was trash-talking the public school system.
Misleading headlines: a standard political/journalistic tool to distort public opinion.
