Greeting from New Hampshire. This is state number 34 for me. :) (Well, OK—there are ten or so other states that I have been in before but have not visited in the van yet.)
I’ll be here just a few days, then heading over to Cincinnati and begin working my way down to Florida for the winter.
For those who don't know, I live in a converted campervan and am traveling around the country, posting photo diaries of places that I have visited. :)
First place I stopped in New Hampshire was the USS Albacore Museum, near Portsmouth. This was a secret experimental design built after WW2 (there are parts of her that are still classified) that was intended to test a new hull shape, specifically built for greater efficiency underwater and for running quietly. Since she was only used as a test subject for submarine-hunting practice, she was never armed and doesn’t have any torpedo tubes or weapons. She was retired in the 70s, and now serves as a museum.
Her history is pretty interesting (though much of what she did still remains “secret”), so I’ll likely do a full “Museum Pieces” history diary on her at some point.
Some photos.
