In the NC-09 special congressional election held last week as a redo of the flawed 2018 election, Dan Bishop beat Dan McCready by about 4000 votes. A few days before the election, DK included in its email rec list a request for support for McCready. I responded to that request, and I suspect many other DK readers did so as well.
The contribution form included a box for McCready and the expected tip box for DK, plus a 3rd option: support for a get-out-the-vote effort for a Native American tribe that is well represented in the NC 9th District, the Lumbees. I split my contribution roughly equally between McCready and the Lumbee vote effort. Unfortunately for those of us who had hoped for a Democratic win, the Lumbees are very conservative and have recently supported Republican candidates over Democratic. Thus, according to an article from The Hill, in Lumbee-strong Robeson County, McCready beat his Republican opponent by 4700 votes in 2018 but by only 233 in the redo -- the difference being more than the overall difference in an election in which turnout was down from that in 2018 by about one-third. A big factor in Lumbee support for Bishop is said to be his staunch support of Trump.
I am left feeling that my contribution may have helped my candidate less than his opponent. In the future, a bit better homework by DK would be appreciated.
