I’ll be frank. Nothing would make me happier than for the senate to vote 51-49 in favor of calling witnesses for the impeachment trial. I take that back. I think it would be even more exciting and damning to the Republican’s case for Justice Roberts to break a 50-50 tie vote in favor of calling witnesses. That scenario would entail a figurative moral slap in the face to Republicans.
Unfortunately, I don’t see that happening. In the short run, it will give the Republicans a victory. In the long run of course, history will judge the Republican much more harshly. But let’s face the facts – most Republicans in the senate will be long dead before history adjudicates this matter. So why should they care.
In the medium term, I am beginning to think that a Republican cover up will hurt them. Let’s face the facts – the vote is a fait accompli. There is probably no act heinous enough that Trump could do to sway the vote of most Republican senators. After all is said and done, Trump will remain in office for another eleven months.
One way or another, we will also hear from John Bolton and his story will be damning. It is an understatement for me to say that I am not a fan of John Bolton’s hawkish politics, but as oxymoronic as it sounds, it appears that he is a truthful person. After Bolton reveals his secrets, how are people like Joni Ernst, Cory Gardner, and Rob Portman going to respond. They certainly can’t claim ignorance when they had the power to call Bolton as a witness.
In short, “If only I had known!” simply won’t work as a logical argument for sane people. It will work for rabid Trump supporters, of course, but not to independent swing voters with more than half of their brain cells intact.
