Some very big news out of Mississippi:
Here’s a little more info from Espy’s campaign manager, Joe O’Hern:
After calling out the national Democratic party for their lack of commitment to Mississippi, Espy has gained support the campaign staff say is needed to best Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith.
“The biggest thing is, I think everyone is taking notice of what Mike has been selling from day one in this campaign, that this race is real and Mississippi is a battleground state,” said O’Hern.
O’hern a nationally recognized Democratic political operative has put together a diverse team of strategists to put together an 82 county campaign plan–that so far has them within 1 percentage point of Hyde-Smith in the latest polling.
“It wasn’t just at the end of September that we’ve been putting this campaign together, Mike’s been crisscrossing the state, Mike’s been hosting virtual events– he’s been out there talking to Mississippians,” O’Hern said.
By the way, here’s a sign that she’s running scared:
Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith is one of just nine incumbent U.S. senators running for re-election this year who has not agreed to debate their opponent.
Hyde-Smith, who faces a challenge from former Democratic congressman Mike Espy, is among 31 incumbents running for re-election in 2020. Espy has accepted two debate invitations and has publicly chastised Hyde-Smith for not doing the same.
Hyde-Smith’s campaign has said she has been busy doing her job as senator and hasn’t had time to schedule a debate and said Espy is trying to make political hay.
We need to keep up the momentum for Espy’s campaign and U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren (D. MA) has been helping give Espy’s campaign a boost. Received this e-mail today from Warren in support of Espy’s campaign:
This summer, I was honored to endorse Mike Espy for Senate in Mississippi.
Now, the latest poll shows Mike Espy is down by just one point — a virtual tie. He raised more money in the first two days of October than his Republican incumbent opponent had on hand at the end of June.
So understand this: He has real momentum. He can win this race, help Democrats take back the Senate, and make history as the state's first Black senator since Reconstruction — as long as we stay in the fight by his side.
If you can, please split a donation of $175 or whatever you can to support Mike Espy's campaign and Warren Democrats. Your contribution would be an investment in one of Democrats' best chances to flip a Senate seat — and help elect champions for working people up and down the ballot.
Mike is exactly the kind of hopeful, hard-working, and dedicated public servant that we need more of in the Senate.
He has spent his career fighting for working families, from his time serving Mississippi as a congressman, to becoming the first Black U.S. Department of Agriculture secretary in U.S. history. Mike is ready to fight for each and every Mississippian with empathy and determination — to expand affordable health care, broadband, and quality public education.
He knows how to fight — and he knows how to win. He's built up muscle memory and a powerful grassroots organization from a track record of running strong campaigns in Mississippi. With grassroots donations pouring in from across the country, he said in a recent interview that his campaign knows exactly where to invest each dollar — down to the neighborhood level — to lead to victory.
So if you're looking for a place where your next donation will make a real difference — to help take back the Senate and elect someone who fights for working people — Mike's your guy.
If you're able to make a financial contribution right now, will you split a donation to help elect Mike Espy and support Warren Democrats across the country?
Thanks for being a part of this,
Elizabeth
