Variety reports that Fox News Channel will make $1.32 billion in advertising this year, far more than CNN at $773.1 million and MSNBC $723.1 million. The Fox News Channel has created a successful business model based upon producing and reinforcing division between the constituents of two major political parties. It's program hosts amplify the chasm and monetarily benefit by fanning the flames of anger and hate. A successful business model it has been, Fox News has been able to monetize this to their advantage with a 7.9 percent increase in revenue from last year. One may well wonder if there is a connection between Fox News and the Russian government. As unlikely as this may sound, political division and discord in the United States benefit Russia and its goal of becoming a global power taking the place of the United States, now an isolationist and divided country. By further damaging America's position in the world, in addition to the damage inflicted by the current sitting lame-duck president, it weakens the power and influence of the United States. The resulting collective weariness, combined with the actions of the current administration, contributes to undermining the foundation of our democracy. Fox News programming not only rewards Fox handsomely but also helps the Russian government meet its own goal of manipulating constituents of both parties. According to Pew Research, 9 out of every 10 Fox News viewers are non-Hispanic white compared to 62.8% of all adults in the general population. It would be fair to say that Fox News viewers are a pretty homogeneous group that identifies itself as conflicting not only with progressive policies but social movements as well. Fox News monetarily profits from hate and discord, creating a hostile environment all the while making sure that their audience stays tuned so that Fox can continue to see year-over-year revenue increases. Spreading falsehoods about progressives, they reinforce the negative perceptions held by their audience. Fox News profits from serving as a proxy for the Russian government by fueling anger and suspicion while at the same time advancing the agenda of right-wing groups. It undermines the foundation of democracy by making use of loopholes the sitting President has exploited, time and again, through his populist agenda.
