I’m sorry, but I don’t understand why the Democrats and President-Elect Biden are still dragging their feet on bringing a law suit against the GSA to enforce the ascertainment of the “apparent winner” in the Transition Law. While the law itself does not specify any sanctions for non-compliance, if Emily Murphy ignores a judge’s order to comply it does (contempt).
I understand why Trump doesn’t want Emily Murphy to sign the ascertainment, it weakens the appearance in his current con-game, that his frivolous law suits are real, and “reassures” his marks that they aren’t just throwing their money away “supporting the cause” with their donations.
Yes, a law suit takes time, but the longer you wait to bring it, the more time it wastes. And, that time not only delays the transition preparation, it is time Trump IS using to continue to sow division and distrust about the election. By not filing, the Democrats are enabling Trump just as much as the Republicans (who are recipients of some of that con-money) for not speaking up in support of the election integrity and the clear outcome.
I know the Republicans are on full-throttle soliciting donations in “support of the law suits,” because even a liberal/progressive like me has received email solicitations from the likes of Don Jr., I guess just in case…
However, I personally also see a slew of email solicitations from the Democrats and liberal PACs using “opposition to” Trump’s marketing con in an attempt to stir up enough emotion to get their own donors to part with more money, and I begin to wonder… Are Democrats becoming just as willing to help stoke extremist division as their Republican counterparts in order to sustain their revenue stream?
President-Elect Biden can talk about (and may really believe) that by not bringing a law suit to force open the transition access to resources he his “building bridges” to work with Republicans after January 20. I would remind him that betting on a “partner” with a history of disingenuous negotiation tactics is a treacherous strategy under any circumstances. Where is an example in the 21st Century that Republicans are interested in changing their extreme obstructionism to any governance action by a Democratic presidency (or Congressional proposal)? From their history, game theory says they need to provide some action first before they should be trusted, let alone relied on.
I am not concerned about the money Trump’s cult followers are throwing away on his con-game of “election fraud” (that’s their issue). However, I am very concerned about the damage being done to our democracy by enabling him to stop a transition ascertainment that, if enforced, would put one more nail in the coffin of his con.
Perhaps it is time for the liberal and progressive PACs to stop raising money off imploring Emily Murphy to “do the right and moral thing,” which she will never do, and start putting pressure on President-Elect Biden and the Democrats to begin legal action immediately to force the GSA to ascertain the apparent winner based on the actual popular and electoral college vote margins.
The longer the Democrats wait the more time the transition loses and the more time Trump has to spread doubt about our election processes and force both sides into even more extreme beliefs. Great for raising Money. Not so good for our Constitutional Democracy.
