In the minds of some American Christians, particularly those who can be classified as fundamentalist, conservative, and/or nationalistic, the power of Satan is still alive and well and must be battled spiritually, physically, and legally. Those who oppose this theocratic vision of the United States are branded as either Satan worshipers or as being under the influence of Satan.
Democrats and Progressives
Some fundamentalist Christian preachers proclaim that Democrats and progressives are allied with Satan and filled with demonic spirits.
Preacher Carl Gallups says:
“They have this demonic spirit in them—whether they know it or not, whether they are trying to feed it or foster it or not—they do. And the Bible tells us these things would happen.”
He goes on to say:
“They have this spirit in them of hating all things biblical, all things godly, all things Jesus Christ, hating all things that are pure truth, hating all things that have any righteousness attached to them at all. Instead, they plunge themselves into socialism, into communism, the misuse of technology, into all kinds of evil and darkness and sexual perversion, and the confusion of marriage and gender and home and family … [into] this amalgamation that Satan is going to use in the Last Days.”
Feminism
For a number of fundamentalist Christians, feminism—the idea that women should be politically, socially, and legally equal to men—is the personification of evil. Many see feminism as a manifestation of the spirit of Jezebel.
In his book Jezebel’s War With America: The Plot to Destroy the Country and What We Can Do to Turn the Tide, Michael Brown sees feminism as part of a Satanic plot to destroy the nation. In this book he describes Jezebel as the most wicked woman in the Bible and sees her as the first radical feminist and the ultimate feminist. According to Brown:
“the Lord has appointed men to have the primary role in governmental authority. That is why the vast majority of national leaders in the Bible were men, and that is why the vast majority of spiritual leaders in the Bible were men.”
In this worldview, women leaders, such as Hillary Clinton, are seen as being influenced by the spirit of Jezebel. Peter Montgomery, in an article in Right Wing Watch, provides some background:
“The biblical character of Jezebel was married to the Israelite king, Ahab, and was eventually killed for having convinced her husband to persecute God’s prophets and promote the worship of false gods. In the Bible, God sends the warrior Jehu to kill Jezebel, and when Jehu arrives, a couple of eunuchs who had been serving Jezebel threw her down from the building so that Jehu could trample her underfoot. Among conservative Christians, “Jezebel” is used as shorthand symbol for anything from sexual immorality to man-hating feminism.”
Non-Christian religions
It is common among many Christians to believe that non-Christian religions worship Satan. One of the major world religions that they characterize as Satanic is Islam. Gina Miller, who is described as a conservative Christian political writer, has this to say:
“Islam is a demonic, militant-political-religious ideology born of the children of Ishmael, and like them, it has greatly proliferated. It is one of Satan’s premiere deceptions, tyrannically ensnaring countless millions of people…”
With regard to other religions, Gina Miller says:
“From the beginning of time, Satan and the other fallen angels (demons) have made war against the Lord and His creation. It is their sole mission to steal, kill and destroy what God has made and to keep as many people as possible from the knowledge of salvation through Jesus. In this mission, they have heaped deception upon deception for mankind. They have created countless false doctrines and distractions to mislead and deceive people into taking the path to Hell. The world’s false religions—all those whose foundation is not solely the Gospel of Christ—lead to one place: eternal damnation and separation from God.”
Abortion
Many fundamentalist Christians see people who support women’s reproduction rights and abortion as being servants of Satan. Paula White, spiritual advisor to President Donald Trump and self-described “prophetess”, says this about those who support abortion:
“…men and women who have sold themselves, their conscience, their bodies, their souls, their spirits to Satan to do evil against the children of God and terminate them.”
Halloween
For many fundamentalist Christians, Halloween is not harmless fun but a celebration of Satanism, demon-worship, and evil. Some Christian authors call for true Christians to repent for past participation in Halloween in the same way that they would repent for their involvement with pornography, masturbation, rape, stealing, or vulgar language.
