We are all in a stew, and rightly so. Politics, the climate crisis, Covid19, floods here, fires there, too many of us leaping from paycheck to paycheck as on wobbly rocks in a cold river. It is easy, when frustrated and worried, to snipe and snarl at people with whom we should get along, but we must all remember that we are on the same side, in the end.
Anyway, I found something that maybe people can think of, and set aside differences for a few minutes to discuss, and share ideas. Maybe even generate a smile or two.
A few years ago I was in a yarn shop that offered various lessons in fiber arts, from spinning, knitting and crocheting to needlepoint and serious embroidery. The owner of the shop had a stack of cards on the counter, which read:
Each One, Teach One
What if everyone in the world who knitted, weaved, spun yarn or tales, played music, painted, carved wood, took pictures, grew flowers, climbed trees, cared for bees, rode horses, trained dogs, sheared sheep, identified bugs, could cook a gourmet meal (maybe not with the bugs!), or had some other interesting skill — and everybody does — taught just one other person?
Me, I could show someone the practical skills of good basic cooking, and growing a vegetable garden, and how to build a fire, and make bread. Though I consider myself still a student, I could teach someone how to paint and draw.
What would you teach? How to fell a tree? How to do accounting? Fly a plane? Sing a madrigal? Plaster a wall? Tap dance? Overhaul an engine? Turn a double play? Make perfect paella?
The floor is open. Let’s hear about some of the skills this community has to share.
