While plenty has been written about Lamar Alexander’s cowardice, dereliction of duty, and general incoherence, I feel like this particular bit of hypocrisy has not been sufficiently communicated to the populace at large. Here is Alexander, then a Presidential hopeful, speaking on the Clinton impeachment at a press conference, as reported by the Oklahoman:
"The president's job is to set an example for the country and to behave a little better than the rest of us do, not a lot worse…. I think the honorable and the most responsible thing for the president to do is to recognize his mistakes and step aside. I think he should resign."
Obviously, hypocrisy is not something that bothers Republicans like Lindsay Graham and Mitch McConnell. However, Alexander seems to be one of the few Republicans who still cares about what people think of him. So it’s disappointing that, in interviews and profiles by major media outlets since his vote against witnesses, he has yet to be confronted with his own past views on this topic. Given that he has explicitly acknowledged that Trump’s behavior falls in to the “a lot worse” category, surely he should be asked to explain his reluctance to call for the President’s resignation, as he did Clinton’s?
