When you hear people talk about socialism, they bring up complex government entities as though there is a major change different from anything in the American experience. The social contract we all live by, though, tells us some items are best handled in a way that everyone shares a burden. The thing we seek isn’t to make a huge profit, or to be a blockbuster business. Sometimes, the community provides services just because a community knows that these services make everywhere a better place to live.
City parks, museums, libraries. All efforts are undertaken with tax dollars from everyone, without an alternative plan to make money. They exist for their own sake.
I walked into a bathroom at a library and was greeted with this sign. The sign was simple: we know you may need help with these topics, and it is scary to ask someone in person about how to find information on these topics. It’s OK, let us help you right here, anonymously. If you need more help, know that we are here for you with no judgment, and we want to help you find what can help you.
If these issues are too much of a struggle, then here are some phone numbers of counselors and help services of people who can do their best to help you.
Printing and posting this document has no monetary benefit to the library. The libraries don’t gain by buying in books or improving the materials they make available for people seeking help.
Not once in my life have I heard people say: we hate socialism, and where we will start is by dismantling libraries! People should assemble their own libraries, it isn’t up to my tax dollar to pay for those books and librarians!
Why? Because in their heart, people like these services when they feel it benefits them. They only dislike them when someone tells them that someone else “gets more” or something different.
Librarians are heroes. Brought to you with community tax dollars for the greater good.
