Sitting here in New York City, Manhattan, we’re acutely aware of our island vulnerability to being cut off from basic supplies shipped in from the mainland. When social distancing first got serious in the City, supermarket shelves emptied. I wasn’t worried because I knew the supply chain was still up and running, it just wasn’t used to coping with the sudden run on products. After a week, stocks of meat, fruit, and dry goods, have resumed to more or less normal. (Purchasing of vitamin C and D excepted. It cannot be found even in chain stores, GNC, Vitaminshoppe, CVS. I finally had to have it shipped in by Amazon.) But I’m thinking of what happens when CV-19 starts hitting small towns and rural America, the processing and packing plants, the trucking companies. That stops the supply chain. We here on the island would appreciate a heads up, if possible, when you hear local news sources talk about plant closings and layoffs. It could serve readers of the DK community here as an early warning system and a chance to make informed judgements about staying or leaving.
