I did another blog about risk: Here: Rolling the dice. I wanted to add something. We take a lot of little risk throughout our days, cooking dinner on the stove, going up stairs, driving, there's lots of things. Malinowski watched South Pacific islanders perform rituals to ensure safety and success in dangerous situations, such as fishing on the open ocean, but no rituals for safer situations like fishing in the lagoons. When our behavior has a high risk of failure or disaster, we notice it more. We're more likely to ruminate or say a prayer. Taking big risks leads to spirituality. We feel strong emotions when we're out of control. Spirituality involves feeling out of control, like giving your life to a higher power. We admire people who step out of their comfort zone. Trump makes us feel out of control. This is the spiritual equivalent of a market failure in economics. This explains why conservatives are against the social safety net-it takes a lot of the risk out of life.
