Congressman Ted Yoho has never been the most stable Republican out there. In 2013 Yoho said that the debt ceiling should not be raised. He then remarked that “I think, personally, it would bring stability to the world markets,” since they would be assured that the United States had moved decisively to curb its debt.” Most experts and congresspeople agree this would have caused massive economic damage to the United States.
It is apparent that Yoho and many like him have decided that it is acceptable to refer to a fellow congress member, specifically a 30-year-old woman of color, as a “f*cking b*tch.” Yoho is thankfully not running for re-election, but repeated outbursts from Republicans like Yoho demonstrate a key problem that has come increasingly into light: Deep-Red Republicans don’t fear the consequences of their actions. It’s not shocking that Yoho, a man who voted against the Emmett Till anti-lynching bill, would harbor discriminatory beliefs. However, his recent behavior is deeply disturbing. It is not appropriate to verbally accost another member of Congress simply because you disagree with that individual’s opinion. And to call a colleague a “f*cking b*tch” is beyond the pale.
Yoho has become known for his instability. He once equated the idea of protecting wildlife with protecting an embryo by stating “How can we as a nation have laws that protect the sea turtle or bald eagle, but yet refuse to protect the same of our own species?” Comments like this didn’t hurt Yoho. He went on to win re-election in 2016 and 2018 by wide margins.
Thankfully, Yoho is on the way out and his potential successors have begun vying for his seat. Failed Hollywood actor Judson Sapp and Yoho’s former campaign manager Kat Cammack seek to ensure Republicans control this district for the next two years.
The Democrats have three candidates vying for the seat. Two of the candidates are independents who re-registered as Dems after losing previous races. There is only one man who can turn the tide, one man who can stand for the Democratic Party in the state of Florida. Adam Christensen, a 26-year-old progressive, small business owner is running to become Yoho’s successor. Christensen likes to say “If you work 8 hours a day you should be able to afford a home, a family and have a little money left over. I don’t think that’s very radical, do you?” The only way for the Democratic Party to move forward is to back people like Christensen in deep red states. We must fight to ensure that Democrats run competitive races in every state across the country.
Below is a link to Christensen’s campaign website so you can help flip one of the many districts currently represented by morally bankrupt Republicans. Our fellow citizens want and deserve better than Ted Yoho. The only way to ensure long lasting change is to build a coalition that will allow us to flip deep red states. Please message me if there are any other progressive candidates you know who are running in deep red districts and I will add a link to their campaign website. We must do as our founding fathers did, flawed as they may have been, because if we don’t hang together and fight for what is right, we will hang separately.
