I think the message of Christianity is that people who are loved behave well or morally. It's not Santa Claus, where you are rewarded for good behavior. It's not self-esteem, where you think that everything you do is good. It requires an understanding of one's own iniquity.
It requires recognizing one's helplessness or powerlessness. The things we do when we are feeling helpless are strongly reinforced. One can learn to be calm in stressful situations by acknowledging helplessness.
Control is an illusion. We can't control our own lives, so we shouldn't expect others to be in control. We should be grateful when our plans work out, but not bitter when they don't. Donald Trump is no more in control than a homeless man on the LA street.
I think love is either universal, or it regresses to your comfort zone. If you don't feel loving pity for Harvey Weinstein, you probably are a little more racist than you're willing to own. Either everyone is in your circle, or you leave out people who are "different." It's not even hating others, more like not loving others. The only way for us to survive is to love each other.
