I am as far to the left as Mr. Nichols is to the right, but I have to agree with him. The left has always had their crazies, but they always came from the downtrodden and dispossessed. In the scheme of history most of them wanted only what was best for the peasant the worker, the laborer. The right has always been about money and power and maintaining both. They have fought revolutions for just those ideas and both sides have had big wins and big loses. As Gorbachev said when visiting America, “The only true communists were alive and well on American college campuses.” Communism has been an utter failure world wide. Most have devolved into totalitarian police states. China being a perfect example.
The left has always seemed to me to be a bit more civil and willing to talk. We do not harass and send death threats, we merely express our difference of opinion. We do not want to murder you because you disagree, but I have met some Trump supporters who wished me dead since my views didn't jive with theirs. Nichols stated that he was always waiting for the leftist revolution to take over, but it never happened. Instead the right wing revolution, through suppressing the right of the America voter, with money and greed took over and that is where we are now. Trump is a manifestation of thirty years of republican vilification of the liberal left. As Michael Moore stated in one of his books, Most of America votes democratic. The only way the Republicans can win, (which is why they hate mail in voting) is to gerrymander or outright steal the elections. Isn't it ironic that the last two Republicans were not elected by the people, but a holdover from slave owning states, namely the electoral college. Yet the last two Democrats won handily.
I do like Brett Stephens commentary, but the sad fact is as many who agree with Mr. Nichol’s conservative position have just woken up to the fact that their constitution is being ripped out right underneath them and by one of their own. Most of us hoped that Trump would rise to the occasion and be a president for the country. He instead has turned the country into a quagmire. What do you expect when you elect a narcissistic criminal. We are like an abused child with a drunken father who only breaths easier when the parent is at work or playing golf. As much as I disagreed with Mr Bush, he still at least did the job. Trump hasn’t even been able to do that. It is up to all of us to get that pant load out of the White House and it is even more important for the Republicans to wake up and smell the disaster they have caused. I find my arguments with my Republican friends worthwhile, because they expand my world view. Now is the time to take one for the team (meaning America) and get Trump out of office. I wish Mr Nichols a decent retirement and would love to have a good conversation about our views.
