Everybody has a yoke. They have a system to regulate their emotions. "Yoga" means "yoke." One might not have consciously chosen one's yoke, but we are creatures of habit, and we stick with what works for us, even if it doesn't work for us all the time. You have to practice something, because you can't practice everything.
There are good and bad yokes. Good ones are such as mindfulness meditation, hatha yoga, and prayer. Bad ones include drug and sex addiction and overeating. Work could be a good or bad way to regulate mood. Good ways make you satisfied with less, and bad ways require more and more stimulus. Spirituality runs counter to economics. Spiritual practice tends to reduce demand for material goods. This is why the US is the biggest market in the world and not the most spiritual.
Work is often the primary way people regulate mood. Things as varied as pastry baking and astronomy give people ways to feel and also affect others. The idea of bv the yoke is to feel you are doing the right thing. Economic productivity is one way to measure this. But not all good yokes are quantitatively measurable. It's more of an aesthetic. We shouldn't rely on economics to control all our behavior. Spirituality is an anti-market phenomenon.
Police work is another yoga. Police practice self-control and social control. It's good when they protect and serve, and bad when they are racist killers. People are quicker to recognize threats than safety. This served us well in the environment of our evolution, but can be dangerous today. Soldiers can hate the enemy, but police are supposed to protect and serve. The Marines practice mindfulness to deal with complex situations on the battlefield or with local citizens without always resorting to violence. Police officers could learn from their example.
There are good and bad yogas. Racism is a bad yoga. One regulates his feelings by hating another group. It is hard to stamp out effective ways to feel. Racism directs one's thoughts, feelings and behaviors. It takes one's mind off his own shortcomings and focuses on other people. It's not just a matter of stamping out racism, sexism, ableism, etc., but replacing them with something good.
