Jesus says it's harder to push a camel through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to get into heaven. I think the problem is that the rich can buy their way out of situations that would promote spirituality in other people. They can afford the drug habit or the trips to rehab. Their money dulls the negative consequences of their addiction.
Poor people can't buy their way out of negative consequences, so they are more likely to be forced into recovery. They are also more likely to wind up in jail because of their addiction. They are faced with the decision of recovery or death.
Spiritual people have found a way to live without feeding an addiction. They can feel their feelings without the need to numb them with an addiction. They regulate their moods with love instead of an addiction.
The income distribution of a society affects the prevalence of addiction in that society. Rich people tend to get more rich and poor people more poor, both of which increase the likelihood of addiction. The rich set it up so income is redistributed from the poor to the rich, so they rip off the poor.
The poor hope to become rich so they allow the rich their privilege, while denying the poor health care and welfare. It seems to me that we have to tax the rich more, because they won't voluntarily give up the money to take care of their problems. The government is an instrument of redistribution. If it doesn't go to the poor, it goes to the rich. Giving to the poor is risky. They might just spend it on drugs. But research has shown that even addicts will choose money over drugs most of the time. Helping people is risky, but the risk can't be eliminated. To take risks with love is life-fulfilling.
