As I recall, John the Evangelist referred to himself as, "the disciple Jesus loved." Long ago this came up in a bible study. The leader said, "He didn't mean eros." I read it was philos and agape. I think he might have implied eros as the Bible refers to sex obliquely. The Greek philosophers had Platonic relationships between men. It doesn't necessarily imply intercourse, just an emotional relationship and release. I think fear of homosexuality is a big part of Evangelical Christianity. Jesus also was said to have made all things clean, so Christians don't have to keep kosher. I think that made women clean, who were unclean a few days a month. The Bible talks about sex all the way through. Look at Freud; sex is omnipresent. I think religious ecstasy might be related to sex. Our society has #MeToo and other issues with sex. I think the church suppresses it, and so people feel guilty, and project their feelings in racism. I think we could get rid of racism, addiction, sexism etc if people could feel spiritual ecstasy. I was taught that in mindfulness meditation you just observe the moment and don't try to have special experiences. But I think those special experiences have a purpose.
