In an unprecedented display of united outrage against commander-in-chief Donald Trump, more than forty senior military officers are now on the record with condemnations.
A compilation was published here in Independent Australia this morning, Monday 21st September.
This article is a spin-off from the current Daily Kos series compiling Republicans, Trump staffers and executives of previous Republican presidents now opposing Trump’s reelection. (Click on Alan Austin, above, to access this series.)
The Independent Australia list piece claims that “activism in the US presidential election by senior military personnel, retired and serving, has reached an unprecedented level.”
The article notes that it is not unknown for a military leader to criticise a president’s decision, nor for a top commander to resign in protest or be sacked. It refers to President Barack Obama having accepted General Stanley McChrystal’s resignation as senior commander in Afghanistan in 2010.
But the article claims “never in US history has there been such an avalanche of condemnations from the top military brass. These have been provoked by more than twelve separate issues.”
Those issues are identified in the article.
A typical expression of outrage is Admiral Steve Abbot’s response to the needless Covid-19 deaths:
“The loss of life around the world is staggering ... The national leadership is manifestly incompetent. The deaths of tens of thousands of Americans who did not need to die will be tied to his [Trump’s] abject failure to provide the leadership we need.”
