233. General Richard Myers, chairman of the joint chiefs of staff under President George W Bush:
"As I understand it, that was a peaceful protest that was disturbed by force, and that's not right. That should not happen in America. And so I was sad. I mean, we should all shed tears over that, that particular act ... I'm glad I don't have to advise this President. I'm sure the senior military leadership is finding it really difficult these days to provide good, sound military advice.” [5 June, 2020]
234. Steve Bartlett, Republican ex-congressman for Texas:
“It’s simply a matter of country over party. It comes down to character. Joe Biden, I’ve known him for years. He has a strong character. He’s a strong leader. He’s a decent human being. … I don’t agree with all of his policies. But I agree with more of Joe Biden’s policies than Donald Trump’s policies.” [24 August, 2020]
235. Lisa Vincent, registered Republican since 2000 in California:
“Trump is a narcissist. He lacks true leadership, character, intelligence, reason and empathy. Right now we are dealing with Covid, race relations, international issues that quite frankly Donald Trump is not capable of handling.” [September 2020]
236. General Raymond A Thomas, President Trump’s former commander of US Special Operations:
“Our government continues to be in unbelievable turmoil. I hope they sort it out soon because we’re a nation at war. As a commander, I’m concerned our government be as stable as possible.” [14 February, 2017]
237. Admiral James Stavridis, former Supreme Allied Commander of NATO
"There was also an ongoing sense that the President's moral structure was, shall we say charitably, unconventional to the military mind. Cadets and midshipmen at the service academies operate on a very simple honor code: to not lie, to not cheat, to not steal. For those who follow along the career path, any officer who violates the Uniform Code of Military Justice in any way ... would be court-martialed and removed from the service. The President's style of playing loose with the truth and facts grate on the military mind." [3 June, 2020]
And from the archives:
238. John Noonan, national security advisor to Republican governor of Florida Jeb Bush:
“It's evident that Trump doesn't have any damn respect for this country. When you run for president, you need to know certain things: You need to know the names and the proper pronunciations of major world leaders. And you sure as hell need to know some basic facts about nuclear weapons ... Trump's choice—to not do the work—is essentially saying ‘I don't care about you or the demands of this office’." [8 August, 2016]
239. Liz Mair, veteran Republican strategist and consultant:
“It’s amazing to me that anybody’s still having a discussion about having some sort of an intervention or bringing him [Trump] back on message. His message is being a loud-mouthed dick, basically, and going out there and offending people and then engaging in a bunch of airing of grievances. That’s what he does. He doesn’t have anything else that he really wants to convey.” [4 August, 2016]
240. Amory “Amo” Houghton Jr, former congressman for New York, died March 2020:
“Given the enormous power of the office, every candidate for president must be judged rigorously in assessing whether he or she has the competence, intelligence, knowledge, understanding, empathy, judgment, and temperament necessary to keep America on a safe and steady course. Donald Trump fails on each of those measures, and he has proven himself manifestly unqualified to be president.” [6 October, 2016]
