Sinclair Lewis wrote a book, “It Can’t Happen Here”. It was about a fascist takeover of the United States.
Lewis was writing in the thirties, when fascism was on the rise. His story is fairly plausible. A Democrat, Berzelius Windrip, (called Buzz) is elected president, and proceeds to turn the United States into a fascist dictatorship like Germany, or Italy.
He builds concentration camps. Holds book burnings. Censors the press. All the things Hitler and Mussolini were doing.
At the end, he is removed and a general called Haig takes over.
The resistance, called The New Underground, is working hard to oppose them. But the fascists are still in charge.
Well, that’s how it happened in the book.
In real life we did elect a quasi fascist. He did abuse his power. Then we got sick of it, at least most of us did, and voted the S.O.B. out of office. He did try for a coup. He didn’t succeed. He is in Florida for now, possibly he will be in prison by the end of the year.
I don’t know about you, but I like that ending better.
So, God Bless the U.S.A. where we vote our fascists out.
