Pandemic Sugar
I have written frequently about candy consumption in the U.S. We eat a lot of sugar. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) reports that the average American consumes between 150 to 170 pounds of refined sugars in one year!
In those previous diaries folks have mentioned candy they enjoy now and when they were kids. Much of our sugar consumption is disguised in the added sugar content of foods, especially soft drinks. Lately in the evening I have dreamed and wished for particular sweets. What comes up most frequently is the toffee from Laura's Fine Candies in Colorado. We buy boxes of this every Christmas for gifts and for ourselves. The company is very DKos friendly and sweet (obviously). The toffee is addictive and lasts only a short time around here. The only other sweet that is on a par with the toffee is the Pecan Pralines we found one year at Costco. We didn’t see these last year which was good because they made us pretty crazy and we ate the whole jar as fast as we could.
Did the pandemic restrictions affect your desire for sweets? I sometimes let my mind wander
and I try to remember the best dessert I’ve had, restaurant or anywhere. Creme Brûlée topped with fresh blueberries is high on the list, but K&L Bistro used to make a caramel sundae that topped the list for me.
What are or were your favorite candies or desserts? Do you still indulge? From my previous diaries I know that chocolate, both dark and light, is pretty much #1. Don’t worry, we won’t run out.
Kitchen Table Kibitzing is a community series for those who wish to share a virtual kitchen table with other readers of Daily Kos who aren’t throwing pies at one another. Drop by to talk about music, your weather, your garden, or what you cooked for supper…. Newcomers may notice that many who post in this series already know one another to some degree, but we welcome guests at our kitchen table and hope to make some new friends as well. |
