A Pew Research Center report[i] describes how religious people kill their children, legally. Children, as in living, breathing kids—not the pea-sizes bits of human tissue that pro-lifers endlessly fret about. Thirty-four states “offer legal shield for parents who refuse medical treatment for children on religious grounds,” says the report.
“ . . . legal exemptions . . . mean, for example, that if a parent withholds medical treatments for an ailing child and instead opts for spiritual treatment through prayer, the child will not to be considered ‘neglected’ under the law, even if he or she dies. These exemptions are meant to accommodate the teachings of some religious groups, such as Christian Scientists and the Idaho-based Followers of Christ. Some of these groups urge and, in the case of Followers of Christ, sometimes mandate the use of faith-based healing practices in lieu of medical science. (emphasis mine)
So, Christians are allowed to kill their own living, breathing children and face no legal consequences. But everyone else, if Christians have their way, will face legal action if they even so much as have a “suspicious” miscarriage. (And, by the way, if God “hates” abortion so much then why does God cause so many of them? Because miscarriage = spontaneous abortion = act of God.)
In any event, it boils down to “We can kill our children because our beliefs must be respected. But we don’t respect your beliefs or right to your own body.”
Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye, said someone who pro-lifers often praise but rarely follow.
