This is a brief diary and a bit of a rant about our celebrity culture run amok, yet again. Tiger Woods is an exceptional, celebrated, ground-breaking golfer of extraordinary talent and is beloved by many. I’m very sorry to hear that he was involved in a single car accident today. Apparently he was driving too fast, lost control of his vehicle and was fairly seriously injured. He’s in the hospital, having surgery on his legs. He’s in stable condition. More will be known in the coming days about the seriousness of his injures and if he will fully recover to golf again.
That’s it. That’s the entire story.
So why the hell is MSNBC treating this like a major news-breaking hostage situation of our highest government officials? Why the hours of wall-to-wall news coverage about TIger Woods being hurt in a self-inflicted car accident? Why they hell are they bringing golf experts onto Ari Melber’s show to opine and speculate on whether or not he will play golf again?
MSNBC is chasing a celebrity injury story with the passion and fever-pitch of an international crisis and attack on our nation. It’s as if the Trump-cult is attacking the Capitol again.
But it’s not. A celebrity had a car wreck, is the hospital, will need to recover but will be fine.
The news outlets have mostly dropped all other news coverage of all the other important topics ... from Merrick Garland hearings to other Senate confirmation hearings, to Texas relief, to COVID, to anything and everything else.
This pearl-clutching, wall-to-wall coverage is beyond absurd. There is nothing new to report about him but plenty to report about everything else that’s going on. But nope. We are stuck in a loop of everyone acting like there is something new to analyze and speculate about the Tiger Woods car accident.
Did you see the video of his vehicle? Let’s take a look at it for the 100th time to see how bad it looks! Let’s talk to some golf experts to see what they have to say about the fact that he’s in the hospital and have them speculate about what they don’t know.
If it bleeds it leads and if it’s a celebrity bleeding then it requires hours and hours of showing the same video, the same talking points, rehashing the same thing we all know ... Tiger Woods was in a car wreck, he’s hurt but going to be okay but let’s bring on some golfers and medical experts to talk about it some more.
Make no mistake, I wish him a full and speedy recovery but the media is failing America in the moment and their obsession with this story is both ridiculous and embarrassing.
