This is the kind of story that brings your faith in humanity back, after so many years of darkness and despair.
Randy Park is the eldest of two sons being raised single-handedly by Hyung Jung Grant, one of the victims of the anti-Asian murder spree in Atlanta. And yes I know the authorities haven’t “determined” the killer’s motives yet but for now I’m still considering this a hate crime.
Facing the loss of the sole breadwinner in his family, and being left to take care of his younger brother, Randy did what many Americans are forced to do in times of extreme emergency: he turned to GoFundMe and started a campaign to raise $20,000 so that he and his little brother could move into a low-cost rental and deal with the aftermath of his loss, including funeral expenses to lay his mother to rest.
"Frankly, I have no time to grieve," he wrote on the fundraiser website. "It is only my brother and I in the United States. The rest of my family is in South Korea and are unable to come."
By Saturday afternoon at least 62,000 people have opened their hearts and donated $2.4 million dollars to Randy’s campaign.
"I will live the rest of my days grateful for what has essentially given my family a second chance," he said. "I can't help but feel selfish for all the attention this has garnered. ...This doesn't represent even a fragment of how I feel. My mother can rest easy knowing I have the support of the world with me."
Faith in humanity restored.
