Now that the political class has written off a bipartisan 1/6 commission, Democrats need to impanel their own investigative bodies to find the causes and the culprits. These should be strictly partisan efforts, to make sure they are not impeded in any way by the very people who profit the most from tearing down the legitimacy of our government.
I suggested in The Bottom of the 1/6 Battle that:
- Each house should set up a select committee with the purpose of determining all facts relevant to the attack and seeking out its root causes. Those committees should make recommendations to prevent a similar occurrence in the future.
- The House should set up an independent commission with the same goals. This commission should have members whose stature will give weight to the results. They should not pick anyone who has previously worked for the Republican Party or held office as a Republican. Funding should be passed into law using reconciliation and signed by the President.
- The investigative committees should subpoena every person in Congress to testify. They need to ask each one whether they had any contact or communication with any of the people or groups known to be behind the 1/6 attack.

Members of Congress have dillied and dallied over this. It’s time for them to act, and it’s time for them to act effectively. Republicans tried to overthrow the elected government of the United States. Some of them are good people, but that does not excuse the ones who aren’t.
