My parents’ hometown was among the places recently flooded in Germany. My mom and I reached out to my relatives there and fortunately they’re OK. It’s still weird seeing a familiar place from my childhood showing up on the news as a climate disaster.
“Mom, there’s a car floating by our window.”
It’s not the only place hit by catastrophic flooding.
Northern California, where I live, is on the opposite end of the climate crisis; we’re dry as gunpowder. So far, sunny Sonoma County hasn’t gone up in flames yet this year but there’s another 3 months before it rains again and our fire departments are busy.
They’ve been doing great work and they’ve learned some things since the fires of 2017, 2019 and 2020, all within the county.
Go a couple hundred miles to the northeast of here and, well,
Oregon is even worse.
It’s dwarfed by Siberia.
I guess we’ll have to pick our poison.
Kitchen Table Kibitzing is a community series for those who wish to share a virtual kitchen table with other readers of Daily Kos who aren’t throwing pies at one another. Drop by to talk about music, your weather, your garden, or what you cooked for supper…. Newcomers may notice that many who post in this series already know one another to some degree, but we welcome guests at our kitchen table and hope to make some new friends as well.
