The insurrectionists will fight to the death for Trump and his rebellion, so it’s foolish for us or our leaders to continue to behave as if January 6th was a one-off! Removing Trump from the equation, which could have been successful a short while ago, won’t stop the movement started in his name now, but he and the other instigators and planners must be brought to justice or we could well become a fascist state. Trump and his political cronies have these people seeing themselves as patriots, much like the patriots who refused to be subject to a king, yet they’re putting a king-like demagogue on a throne. The good Christians who claim to love Jesus are now worshipping a false golden idol in Trump. None of it makes sense to most of us, but the tyranny of the minority is real and dangerous, so it must be addressed immediately and aggressively if we have any hope of protecting our democracy.
Seven Republican senators voted to convict Trump for inciting an insurrection and attempting to overturn a free and fair election: Richard Burr, Bill Cassidy, Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, Mitt Romney, Ben Sasse, and Patrick Toomey. Whatever we may think of the republican establishment, that was a brave thing to do in a Congress where keeping power is everything and five of them aren’t retiring in 2022. Certainly, Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger have shown great courage by joining the Select Committee to hold those who instigated the insurrection accountable. Here’s hoping that they have the courage of their convictions when it comes to upholding the rule of law! We can no longer count on many of our courts, since the Trump appointees, often unqualified, were rushed in by a shameless Mitch McConnell, so Congress and the DOJ must protect and defend the Constitution! One wonders whether our politicians, from either party, have the inner strength to fight the good fight or if they can even see that it is a fight to keep our republic. If they don’t recognize the danger, it will be mostly in the hands of the republicans and the fate of democracy will rest with them.
