Representative Marjorie Taylor Green has suggested a divorce between red and blue states.
While this suggestion has some merit, it has the great disadvantage of leaving Democrats and Republicans together in one state. And this gives rise to a continuing fight over which party will control the government of that state, and the governments of the counties and municipalities within it. And relocating people to red or blue states would be highly disruptive to people’s lives and to the economy.
It would be far better to provide separate governing bodies; one for Democrats and one for Republicans.
It would work this way: Every citizen would decide for themselves whether they wanted Democratic or Republican governance at the national, state, and local levels. Persons who elect not to make that choice would be assigned to one party or the other, based on the last digit of their social security number; odd for Democrats, even for Republicans. And, of course, any person could change their registration at any time.
Each party would hold their own elections. Thus, at the national level, we would have two Congresses, two Presidents, and two Judicial branches of government; one for Democrats and one for Republicans. Democrats would hold the seat of government in the odd numbered months, and Republicans would operate it in the even numbered months. And this system would apply to the state and local governments as well.
Of course, this would mean separate sets of laws - and law enforcement - for members of the two parties. So, it would be important for everyone to carry their party identification at all times. For example, if a Republican driver was pulled over for speeding by a Democrat highway patrolman, that person would have to be released because he/she was obeying the higher Republican speed limit, not the Democratic one.
This system might cause some minor confusion when it is first implemented. But it provides for the possibility of giving both Democrats and Republicans everything they want, and thus would be far superior to Ms. Green’s suggestion for a national divorce.
