Our local Democratic US Senatorial Candidate in Kansas is Rev Mark Holland (who noted Thursday he didn't have enough money to buy lunch at Taco Bell). See www.facebook.com/… and www.hollandforkansas.com . I haven't seen any TV ads for Rev Holland even though I live in the KC metro area. But there’s a substantial grassroots effort.
The National Democratic Party seems to have overlooked KS this cycle. This is puzzling. Kansans’ beat back the proposed anti-Abortion Amendment by a 59% NO vote. (It’s fertile flip potential indicated when Target Smart analyzed that vote in detail). Suffice it to say that after Dobbs there was a surge in registrations and turnout by younger and women voters who were then joined by a substantial number of Republicans (estimated at 20-33%) to keep politicians out of our health care decisions. See https://insights.targetsmart.com/new-data-on-kansas-abortion-vote.html. Rev. Holland believes in the separation of Church and State and legislation imposing one’s religious beliefs about abortion disregards that line.
Target Smart is showing that women's and young adult voter registration has continued to surge since the August NO vote.
Folks might want to pay more attention to what is going on in the heartland.
Kansans coined the term “Populists”. Whether Republican, Democrat, or Independent, progressive values tend to run deep. We proudly call ourselves “The Free State”. We still use the Populist slogan “Equal rights to all, special privileges to none.” (For more on Kansas’s Populists and how the term was high-jacked and sullied see read.amazon.com/… ) The Kansas 2nd US House and it’s US Senate races are tight. Each merit a little more love and attention.
