Casey DeSantis, Florida’s First Lady and the spouse of Florida governor Ron DeSantis (R), is playing a prominent role in relief efforts for residents affected by Hurricane Ian. Both Ron and Casey DeSantis have placed an emphasis on funds from private donations, although Casey herself has seeked donations from non-profit charity groups.
Shortly after the storm struck on Sept. 28, the governor’s office announced that Ms. DeSantis had “activated” the commission’s disaster relief fund. While Florida is also seeking significant help from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Mr. DeSantis has emphasized the importance of private donations.
With FEMA, he said, “you either qualify for certain types of individual assistance or you don’t,” adding that private organizations “are a little bit more nimble with how they help people.”
The approach may or may not be related to comments made by Casey DeSantis during a West Palm Beach event hosted by Club 45, a “a non-profit corporation formed to support the agenda of our 45th President of the United States, Donald J. Trump”.
It’s that — outside of government, because again, government is not there to solve problems. Government is there for a limited and defined role. And so government then… [applause]
Can that quasi-libertarian mindset be a motivation for every Florida Republican that voted against funding for FEMA?
Either way, the notion that Republicans will do anything to fix inflation, crime, foreign policy, etc. is downright laughable, especially if Republicans believe that government is not the solution to the problems we face.
