I just returned home from attending the Slotkin-Cheney event at East Lansing High School. There were about 500 hundred or so of us packed into the school gym. The focus of the evening was on democracy and bipartisanship; about putting country before party. Rep. Slotkin spoke about the need for principled leaders and engaged citizens. She also spoke about the importance of this moment in history — that we needed to see each other as fully human and work together towards a functioning democracy despite policy disagreements. Lastly, she told us that while she and Rep. Cheney certainly don’t agree on every issue, they did agree on the fundamental principles of democracy.
When she introduced Rep. Cheney, she recognized her as a principled leader, with bravery and fortitude. The room gave Rep. Cheney a standing ovation. Rep. Cheney spoke about how Gerald Ford (the first campaign she worked on as a 10 year old) would have supported Elissa Slotkin, and said this was the first time she ever campaigned for a Democrat, which also received wide applause. She reminded us of the fragility of democracy, and how it will take everyone’s involvement to help keep it alive.
At the end of the event Rep. Liz Cheney endorsed Rep. Elissa Slotkin in the race to represent Michigan's 7th District! Go Elissa!!
