In thinking of all the bile and the depths to which our country has sunken to in politics, I just keep thinking about the quote from Golda Meir. Hers was about peace and education.
Our country is not built upon extremism. Our country was supposed to be built by compromise.
Hell, I would be satisfied if the will of the people entered into it. Not the will of the barely have a majority.
I am sick of how we are being played. Of course the ‘stop the steal’ BS is the worst, but, there are far left positions that would subvert our country as well.
Our two party system just doesn’t put enough choices out there. And both parties won’t tolerate another party to exist, or multiple ones.
And even then we can see that multiple party coalitions have problems.
We could start with education, but as George Carlin said, be happy with what you got, it will never get any better, because the owners don’t want that.
We should make voting a national holiday and do whatever we can to get more Americans to vote. But...are we just voting for a new mask on the same thing?
Perhaps grassroots would do it. But where is the Tea Party today? Where are civil rights? Sure better than they were in the 1950s, but we still ended up with Black Lives Matter. And we are still fighting institutions that resist change and people who can’t see minority views because they are threaten, don’t want the moral cognitive dissonance, or just stink.
Perhaps the best we can hope for is the pendulum to swing back.
With the media divided we can’t even get a straight answer there, sigh. Does anyone understand how much we are lied to by the omission of important issues?
When public radio started covering how much money a candidate had in their war chest instead of the issues I was disgusted. You waste air time on that?
How about we try to bring integrity back to our politicians? That would be a start…. Report their failings. Report their conflicts of interest. And yet no one cares? They hate the other side so much that President Trump got elected and that Herschel Walker can get elected? (and btw, big Cowboys fan)
People are given enough propaganda that they are taught to hate fellow Americans more than love their own country. How much name calling happens in your family?
Hell I am disgusted by listening while NPR talks about a bus in India going over a bridge and drowning people. It is a tragedy. But how many people die on the roads every year in India, and here in the States? Why pick that? Back to ‘if it bleeds it leads’? What about the other 7 billion on the planet?
Is it the Russian attitude that if your cow dies then I am happy?
Perhaps it is what the Jewish Russians said: “God bless and keep the (tzar...fill in the blank) far away from us.”
How about taking that sound bite between programs to focus on Ukraine, inflation, etc. How about how with inflation corporate profits are at an all time high? Nah, its so and so’s fault. Even then its hard to piece out.
But at least my public radio channels are not full of commentators who bill themselves as ‘entertainers’ to avoid libel. Wow.
When my parents passed away, when someone dies from a disease, yes, it is a tragedy, but let’s focus on what affects us and what we should be focused on to move the whole planet forward, let alone our own country. How about what we should know to pressure representatives into actually representing US.
Social wedge issues means we can pick your pocket while you gas on about abortion and let kids die trying to get away from violence to come to a better country. Hell, if you care about kids, then fix the inequities of society or at least un-tilt the table. But then...we are back to George Carlin again, eh?
Again, the choice of this or that.
Then again, gay marriage (assuming it lasts), domestic abuse, bullying, smoking, less car pollution (as compared to the 60s, far less), moving to electric vehicles, we have to also be thankful for those changes no matter how much others hate them or are told to hate them. Those threatened who have money are going to get their message out.
We’ll just have to fight like hell to keep moving freedom and our rights and the planet we leave for the next generation better than it was before. Sit on your ass and you’ll get a Supreme Court like we have now.
Progress has come when people love their country more than they hate the other side. We have to be the ones to do it. All of us. Love others as I have loved you so that others know you follow me. A nice Jewish boy said that. Reject fear, anger and hate. Toss your righteous indignation into the trash. Instead, talk to each other. That’s a start.
