For those who saw this coming — seems you were right.
According to court records obtained by The Daily Beast, Santos appears to be the subject of a previously unacknowledged Sept. 2019 divorce with a woman in Queens County, New York. The divorce—which Santos has not discussed publicly—adds new uncertainty to his already shaky biographical and political claims.
“I am openly gay, have never had an issue with my sexual identity in the past decade, and I can tell you and assure you, I will always be an advocate for LGBTQ folks,” Santos told USA Today in October, responding to criticism about his support for Florida’s so-called “Don’t Say Gay Bill” signed into law this year by GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis.

Just a quick update to yesterday’s story www.dailykos.com/... about the fabulous George Devolder Santos georgeforny.com/... , Republican congressman elect from the NY 3rd Congressional District — which includes predominantly Jewish neighborhoods in NE Queens and adjacent parts of Long Island and is currently represented by outgoing Jewish Democrat Rep. Tom Suozzi, who ran for Governor of New York rather than running for reelection to Congress.
Reports that Santos had fabricated vast swaths of his biography and resume’ were first reported on Monday in the New York Times www.nytimes.com/… and were widely circulated by the national and international media who have verified much of the NYT reporting by Grace Ashford and Michael Gold.
The numerous fabrications in Santos biography related to his education, work history, and charitable work, prompted investigation of other claims made in his biography — including the story he has told about his grandparents fleeing Ukraine and later Belgium to Brazil in the 1940s in response to persecution of Jews. Reporting today forward.com/... newrepublic.com/...suggests that that story is also a complete fabrication. His grandparents were apparently born in Brazil in the late 1920s and were Catholics www.haaretz.com/....www.nytimes.com/...
Santos has claimed Jewish heritage through is mother, Fatima Devolder. The photo above is from Fatima Devolder’s Facebook page — and is one of several that show her and a group of Christians in December 2015 in a home decorated for Christmas engaged in Christian prayer celebrating the birth of Jesus. Records from Brazil show that Fatima Devolder’s parents were Catholics jewishinsider.com/...
I suppose someone will need to check, just to be sure, but I’m confident that the story Santos has on his campaign website georgeforny.com/… where he claims his mother was a financial executive working for a major financial institution in the South Tower of the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001, but escaped unharmed — is also a work of bold unbridled fiction, as was his statement shortly after the election in an interview with the Jewish Insider that he has visited Israel 4 times jewishinsider.com/…
The most serious remaining questions are about Santos personal and campaign finances — which given what we now know about him seem certain to be problematic to say the least. Where did a guy who couldn’t pay is rent a few years ago come up with $700,000 to loan his campaign? www.motherjones.com/...
Republican leadership has been deadly silent about their new colleague. Personally I’d like to hear what R. Elise Stefanik has to say, since she endorsed Santos.
