Canada’s province of Alberta has a freshly minted premier Danielle Smith who would like to create a constitutional crisis in that nation, and it looks like she has recently been handed the opportunity by roughly 1% of Alberta’s eligible electorate:
Danielle Smith’s Sovereignty Act Is Even Worse than Expected — Dave Climenhaga
In keeping with Albertan conservative Orwellian tradition the full name of Bill1 on its way to its second reading through the legislature is the “Alberta Sovereignty within a United Canada Act “.
It is
perhaps the most blatantly unconstitutional pile of crap ever introduced in a legislature in modern Canadian history… a naked assault on the rule of law” — Emmett Macfarlane, University of Waterloo
As the bill currently stands after passing first reading in Alberta’s house, it seems to grant the UCP gov’t’s recently expanded cabinet the power to rewrite any laws it doesn’t like as it sees fit, without recourse (past consultation) conferred to the elected legislature or the courts.
“Under our system of government, purporting to let cabinet rewrite legislation and bypass the legislature is literally the end of democracy” — Emmett Macfarlane
Alberta’s recently self crowned Sovereign Smith, who was installed by roughly 1% of Alberta’s eligible electorate, claims that the ‘act is only to be used in an emergency, so she hopes she will never have to use it’ while simultaneously urging her newly appointed cabinet to find uses for it before next spring, when she will be obligated to call an election. Assuming The Sovereign Danielle and Her UCP cabinet will still feel compelled to observe the democratic process at all by then, that is.
