The lead prosecutors on the Trump financial fraud case suddenly quit a few weeks ago. Today, the NY Times explains the situation in detail.
NY Times explains the end of Manhattan's fraud investigation
Manhattan distract attorney Cyrus Vance did not seek re-election to the office of Manhattan DA this past November after serving three terms. His tenure had been problematical, with decisions not to prosecute rich white people.
Problems with Cyrus Vance
His enthusiasm for investigating Donald Trump’s financial fraud had surprised many. Now, here’s the bigger surprise. His elected successor, Alvin Bragg, has decided not to continue the investigation or indict Trump. Apparently, Bragg feels the evidence is weak. NY State AG Tish James is still conducting a civil suit against the Trump organization for many of the same infractions. This could lead to a sizeable seizure of assets and may be a better approach because civil trials do not require unanimous juries. I always felt a single MAGA juror could sabotage any criminal trial.
But this leaves another question. Whatever happened to the case against Individual-1 that put Michael Cohen in jail? The case against Cohen was prosecuted on the federal level in New York City. It seemed that the same evidence used to indict Cohen was available to indict Inidividual-1. I always assumed that if the Dems won the presidency in 2020, that indictment would follow soon after. So, where is it?
