So, after watching some YouTubes about ways people use their rice cookers beyond just making rice, I ordered one. (Can you make grits in it? Anyone know? Or do you have to stir grits too much?)
Slow cookers have their place, but I’m less than enamored with them. For one thing, I rarely plan meals that far in advance. Nor do I need all the functions on an Instant Pot. But a rice cooker… Well, that seemed like a solution. And under the fold, a rather manic lady makes Mac & Cheese in hers. She definitely has the best attitude!
This morning, I’d like to ask for your rice cooker hacks and suggestions. Below, you’ll find a few ways people are hacking their rice...and beyond.
Fried chicken and rice together in a rice cooker has apparently been a Thing in Japan for a few years. I saw Beryl do a version of it on her channel, but really like this lady’s video too. And I’m with her on the subject of Popeye’s vs. KFC, so… [6:22]:
Cooking a whole tomato in with your rice has also become a Thing. I’m not fond enough of tomatoes to go for the simplest version; but this guy then adds a bunch of other stuff, and that version sounds terrific. (N.B.: the tomato HAS to be super-ripe.) [10:43]
Cantonese Soy Sauce Chicken in a rice cooker? It looks amazing! She uses a small chicken — 1 kilogram, just over two pounds, or about 35 oz. My rice cooker is smallish (8 cups) so I’d probably make this with chicken thighs instead of a whole bird. YMMV, but...YUM. [9:38]
And here’s that Mac & Cheese hack I mentioned earlier [13:21]:
Chocolate Cake in the rice cooker? Who’da thunk it? [7:38]
