There have been a number of opinions in the media about MTG having perjured herself during her testimony at the disqualification hearing last week. Most of those opinions have focused on her tape-loop answer: “I don’t recall.” But those assertions aren’t perjury, or not provable perjury at any rate. No one can prove that she recalls any of the things that she can be shown to have said or written. Lawyers will counsel their clients to provide this answer to any question that could lead them into a perjury trap. There may be video of her making outrageous statements, but whether she recalls having said them is still an open question.
However, she did answer one question with much more information than what her lawyer was comfortable with. Namely, when asked about her accusation that Biden wasn’t fairly elected, she asserted—under oath—that in Georgia there was a lot of evidence of election fraud. And then she went one step further:
She claimed that her husband went to the polls to vote, only to be turned away because he was told that he had already voted by mail. MTG asserted that he had not voted by mail and that he had never even requested a mail-in ballot.
Now here’s a piece of information that can be tracked and verified as true or not. I’m betting that it’s a total lie.
Moreover, since the MAGA crowd has been collecting affidavits from witnesses about election irregularities, I’m wondering if MR. TG has submitted a sworn affidavit to this effect. In other words, this one might be a two-for. Filing a false affidavit, or attempting to vote twice, for him; and perjury for her.
Note—she didn’t testify that her husband told her that this happened, which could provide her a defense. No, she said that it happened.
All reports from Georgia indicate that the state runs a very secure system—run by Republican office holders, and still empty barrels like MTG continue to rage against reality.
Isn’t time for reality to come calling.
