Everyone who knows me knows I like snakes and am always happy to see them.
So here are a few shots of a Cottonmouth (aka Water Moccasin—they are different names for the same snake—and yes, they are dangerously venomous) that I happened to come across in the Everglades. This individual has unusually bright colors—usually Cottonmouths are a bit darker.
Cottonmouths have a reputation as being cranky and grouchy, and are in fact one of the very few snakes that will actively advance upon an intruder with the intention of poking holes in them, but this dude seems pretty accustomed to having tourists walking around, and ignored me and went on about his snakey business. He kept raising his head and tongue-tasting every few minutes, so that means he was hungry and hunting. No froggies or fishies around, though.
For those who don't know, I live in a converted campervan and travel around the country, posting photo diaries of places that I visit. I am currently in Florida for the winter.
