Blinky was a small soft round gold/black puff of feathers. She and her sister Inky roamed their chicken run eating the grass and the bugs. She loved getting fruit and vegetables scraps especially watermelon and pumpkin.
I loved hearing her excited clucking every time she laid an egg. She laid small brown eggs that made the best tasting deviled eggs ever.
She didn’t care to cuddle too much but remained calm when I would pick her up and hug her soft feathered body.
At more than 4 years old, she stopped laying a couple of months ago; but I didn’t care. She was my baby who came as a small chick in a tote with a heat lamp. I watched her grow up in my kitchen before she headed outside to a nice coop and a big fully enclosed chicken run that protected her and her sister from the local predators such as possums and a resident Cooper’s Hawk.
Silkies are unusual small chickens with feathers more like fur. Because they don’t have regular feathers, they can’t fly. Their skin is black and they have 8 toes on their feathered feet. They are very sweet and make great pets as well as giving you breakfast.
My husband and I are going to this weekend to find her sister, Inky, a new companion. Chickens are flock animals who need companionship and we don’t want Inky to be alone. Right now she has a stuffed goose in her coop so she has something to cuddle up to at night.
Goodby Blinky — you will be missed.
