Last week, I wrote about losing Blinky one of my silky chickens. This left her sister Inky alone. I was asked for an update.
Inky spent a lot of time wandering in her chicken run, calling for her sister. I often found the free roaming backyard chickens staying close to Inky’s run, keeping her company throughout the week.
I couldn’t find silkies that were the right age, but was advised that Cochins are good with silkies. Friday we brought Inky 2 half grown Cochin chicks. They are young enough for her to mother, but old enough to live in the coop without extra heat. I was advised by a local silky expert that this would be the best way to introduce new companions to Inky that would grow into her new flock.
The chicks stick pretty close to Inky whenever I am around. I can hear their baby peeps as I check their food and water in the enclosure. Cleo has a bit of the red and gold feathering that looks a lot like Blinky while Katie is all black.
Normally, I would have quarantined the chicks but time was of the essence so the chicks went right in. Inky was a little apprehensive but they seem to be settling in now. The circle of life continues.
