The Colorado State Open Thread is published to chronicle goings-on in thought and deed within our fair state of Colorado. I hope to capture some events, some thoughts that you might have missed and perhaps even some diaries that are worth going back for. I’m also happy to keep posting pictures of things found within Colorado so that you can see and perhaps take part in local events.
I found the moth on the stucco wall by my front door and I hoped that it would be able to pump the blood-like fluid from its huge abdomen out into the wings so that they would strengthen and the moth would be able to fly. When I returned from walking the dogs, the moth had dropped off the wall and my placing it in the sun was not able to revive it. The temperature was around 40 degrees and dropped below freezing later. When I checked it a few hours later, the condition was the same but the legs weren’t moving. I think it was dead, but I still put it in a sheltered location. It hasn’t been there since, so it either was eaten in the cycle of life, it woke up, crawled away and may have recovered enough to confound all expectations or it may have been beamed up to the spaceship while my back was turned.
Some people speculated that it might be a hawk moth, but my suspicion is that it may be a Sphinx moth because of the pink color (also seen in the hawk moth) and the eye circle (seen in the sphinx, but not the hawk moth). There are 27 or so species of sphinx moths, and the sphinx and hawk moths are in the same family so there’s not much difference between them (though they may not agree).
The “One Eyed Sphinx moth” seems to be the right species. Another photo is at www.flickr.com/… but I would rather send you to see it rather than ask for permission for the photo. Here is a collection on Google for them: www.google.com/...
On to a couple of other topics.
A highlight of this last week was getting to have dinner with Kosack acpa, who had come up to spend a long weekend at the YMCA camp that’s basically at the bottom of the hill from our house. I went with her to Bird and Jim’s for a drink and she had dinner while I had sides. Afterwards, I took her to a vantage point from which she could see where the burn nearly two years ago was visible and she was also able to see our house location. I think she enjoyed the evening and she might recommend contacting me to any other Kosack visitors to Estes.
From ColoradoPols.com — Tina Peters was granted permission to travel to Mara Lago to see a screening of the Fevered Wish Dream 2000 Mules.
Indicted Mesa County Clerk Tina Peters is allowed to travel out of state, but only if she provides specific details about where she is going beforehand and gets court approval, District Attorney Dan Rubinstein said Friday.
Peters drew some attention over that when she tweeted Thursday evening from Mar-a-Lago, a resort in Palm Beach, Florida, where she attended a private viewing of a conspiracy theory movie about election fraud with former President Donald Trump…
“While I have some concerns about Ms. Peters as a potential flight risk, due to her access to private flight travel and history of going into hiding during this investigation, I must balance the importance of assuring her appearance in court against the risk that her bond conditions do not improperly influence the upcoming election,” Rubinstein said. “I struck that balance by asking the court to allow travel provided she gave details about her whereabouts when out of state.”
The $400 or $800 Tabor refunds are for taxpayers who have filed their taxes by the end of June, which is the state fiscal year, and doesn’t mean the same thing as the April 18th deadline for federal taxes and if you have questions about what it DOES mean, check out a 9News explainer at www.9news.com/….
While you’re at 9News, or if you would like to read some more about the kerfluffle, check out the recommended diary www.dailykos.com/… about an interview with Kyle Clark from 9News of the Republican front-runner for governor.
Another diary I recommended from this last week is www.dailykos.com/… about a nurse at The Medical Center of Aurora being fired and her career ruined who is now suing the hospital.
Meteor Blades had an article www.dailykos.com/… which has two items of interest to our state — the Bears Ears management plan, especially for those on the western side of our state, and a Denver plan to help people purchase electric bikes and many types of alternate energy utilities and green power devices.
Hopefully that’s enough to encourage some conversation. Please let us hear what’s on your mind in the comments down below. Also, feel free to send me a picture of two to include in the weekly photo quiz. The floor is yours...
