This is a very brief “breaking news” diary, essentially linking you to Prof. Juan Cole’s report on an Israeli military attack on the main Damascus airport on “Friday morning.”
As a news junkie, reading this near midnite PDT which is like 24 hours after Friday morning in the Middle East, i was curious why I hadn’t seen this in any of my news junkie-ing today. I checked my two main sources of global news, the BBC news site and my sub. to the Washington Post site, both of them had plenty of stories about Iran and other developments in their Middle East sections on their site. But neither of them had the slightest mention of an Israeli attack on the Damascus ariport. I haven’t searched further, I’m totally blocked by the NYT and Bloomberg.
Cole reports that the Russian Foreign Ministry “strongly condemned” the Israeli attack, which occurred in the context of Israel’s long-lasting war against Hezbollah, which is actively allied with Syria, Iran and Iraqi Shi’ite forces in Syria’s continued civil war against Sunni militias in Syria. With Russia’s active support of Syria, Turkey’s active support of the Sunni militias, and the jousting between Russia and Israel over the Ukraine war, this seems to be a moment of active shifting of geopolitical threads that should probably be of interest to major news sites.
I was born in the ‘50’s and absorbed an ideology that there was an intelligent American public that was interested in world developments, since I’ve been an adult that’s been eroding, to the point today that the concept of “an intelligent American public” is a ridiculous fantasy.
I’m a news Junkie with a “Highest Honors” degree in History from a good school. I’m also the guy who said in 1978 that history should be about every person on earth, Check my book-length no-clickbait well-established-with-millions-of-hits-over-10-years website, which explores my attempts at a better understanding of history and how humans create it with their every action, plus some commentary on current events and plenty of autobiography.
