When Parliament is in recess there is considerably less political news as legislators are on holiday. The newspapers need to find other stories. About 30 years ago a story about a Pitbull mauling someone hit the headlines. A few days later another mauling by a Pitbull got attention. Pitbull lovers were up in arms (not literally, it is the UK). They felt Pitbulls were being targeted by the media. The AP took no blame as they had had a Pitbull mauling story for everyday of the year β it just they didnβt usually hit the headlines. (For a sense of scale the USA population was just over 4 times the UK population 30 years ago).
The politicians came back from holiday. In short they had been confronted with a problem of public safety β so, in 1991, Pitbulls and three other breeds were banned. Hint: Parliament passes laws based on a majority vote β itβs called Democracy.
